I remember it as if it were yesterday, I was in third grade and my mom was tired of me squinting and complaining of headaches. She dragged me to the eye doctor and I got my first pair of glasses. They were round and brown and instantly made me feel like a total geek. Not surprisingly, those glasses were either lost or broken in no time. I instead, sat in the front of the class and squinted my way through life….anything not to wear the big ugly glasses. Years later, after my eyesight began to get worse, I finally got another pair of glasses, but these were cute and frame less and didn’t make me feel as goofy as the previous pair. Before I knew it, I got my first pair of contacts, and never looked back. A couple of years ago, I started to really consider LASIK eye surgery because it was recommended by my opthomologist due to my vision becoming increasingly worse with every visit. Every year, I put it off because I was too chicken to have it done.
Last Friday, I finally took the plunge…yes, on Friday the 13th of all days. I got up that morning, hyperventilated a bit, tried to forget the LASIK YouTube videos I had seen the day before, and made my way into the city with GT holding my hand and telling me everything would be ok. The truth is, this would not only be life changing for me, but for him as well. I wouldn’t wake him up everyday at 6 am and ask him to help me find my glasses…he was probably happier than I was. So we arrived to the office, they handed me a Valium (THANK GOD) and soon enough, I was ready for my procedure. Luckily a sweet girl at the office held my clammy hand the entire time…and a few minutes later the procedure was completely over.
They told me to keep my eyes closed as they guided me to the small recovery room down the hall and as I sat in a chair the person caring for me placed a dark pair of shades over my eyes, gave me eye drops, and said I ready for discharge. Before I knew it, GT was guiding me down Madison Avenue towards our car, and all I could remember telling him was: ”I’m going to kill you if you let me fall, you know I can’t open my EYES”. He laughed, made me trip and bump into people several times and then we finally made it to our car, and into bed I went. After 6 hours of sleeping at home, I was finally able to open my eyes, and it was truly a whole new world. It’s the most amazing feeling being able to wake up and see everything around you without having to fumble around to find glasses.
So if you’re considering getting LASIK done, I suggest to go ahead and do it! It was totally worth it! Special thanks to Dr. Ken Moadel and his wonderful team for all of the great care!
